How to Buy Crypto for the First Time: Beginner's Guide

Want to fund your account on RaffleKing but never bought crypto before? Start here.

April 27, 2026

Crypto has come a long way since the early days of Bitcoin - back when buying some meant navigating shady websites or mining it on your home computer. Today, digital assets are more regulated and accessible than ever. Stablecoins are increasingly used for everyday transactions, and many traditional investors now diversify their portfolios with crypto, whether through direct ownership or indirect exposure via stock exchange-listed Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs.

If you’re new to the space, the language can still feel intimidating. Seed phrases, wallets, networks, gas fees – it’s a lot of new terminology to absorb at once.

Buying crypto for the first time is straightforward and can be done in just a few clicks. Here is a breakdown of the main options.

1. A centralised exchange (Binance, Kraken)

The most popular route for beginners is a centralised exchange. A CEX is regulated platform that lets you buy, sell and trade crypto and other digital products. You can also use a CEX to hold your funds (similar to a bank) and off-ramp crypto back into cash.

Binance is the biggest exchange in the world by trading volume and a solid starting point, but Kraken and Crypto.com are equally reputable options that follow a near-identical process. The key thing to check when choosing an exchange is whether it's regulated and approved in your country.

Here's how to buy crypto on Binance.

Head to Binance.com and create an account with your email address. You'll need to complete a quick identity verification (KYC), which is standard across all regulated exchanges.

Once verified, navigate to Buy Crypto and select your preferred payment method. Card payments are usually instant. Bank transfers typically take a little longer but often carry lower fees.

Choose the crypto you want to buy, enter the amount, and confirm the transaction. Your funds will land in your Binance wallet, ready to use or send elsewhere.

The steps are broadly the same on Kraken, OKX, and most other major CEXs.

Want to send funds from Binance to RaffleKing?

It's easy and only takes a few steps. On Binance, head to Account Wallet, then Withdraw.

In the address bar, you'll need to enter your unique RaffleKing deposit address. To find it, head to RaffleKing, click Account Balance in the top right corner, and select Deposit. Copy the address generated for your chosen coin and network.

Back in Binance, paste the address into the withdrawal window and make sure the network and token match. Sending funds on the wrong network will result in permanent loss.

Confirm the transaction and your RaffleKing balance should update within a few minutes.

2. Payment processors (Moonpay, Meld)

If you want to buy crypto without setting up a full exchange account, payment processors like Moonpay and Meld let you purchase directly with a card or bank transfer and send it straight to a wallet address. There's no trading interface to navigate: just enter the amount, pick your crypto, and confirm.

3. P2P (peer-to-peer)

If you’re already experienced with traditional finance tools, P2P platforms connect you directly with other people looking to buy or sell crypto, cutting out the exchange as a middleman. Binance has its own P2P marketplace built in, and platforms like BitGet and HodlHodl.

The appeal is flexibility: more payment methods, sometimes better rates, and more privacy. The trade-off is that you're transacting with individuals rather than a regulated platform, so you need to be diligent. Stick to verified sellers with strong track records, never send payment outside the platform's escrow system, and treat any pressure to move fast as a red flag.

P2P is worth knowing about, but for a first purchase, a CEX is the safer and simpler starting point.
